US term

1099-NEC (US)

The US tax form that businesses send to non employee freelancers and contractors who earned 600 dollars or more in a year.

If you freelance in the United States and earn 600 dollars or more from a single client, that client must report the payments on a 1099-NEC and send you a copy. You then report the income on Schedule C of your tax return, deduct allowable business expenses and pay self employment tax. The 600 threshold is per client, not in total, so even small side hustlers often receive multiple forms. Keep an organised record of every payer from January.

Put this knowledge to work.
