Global term
Statement of work (SOW)
A document that defines the deliverables, timeline, acceptance criteria and payment terms for a specific project or engagement.
A statement of work is the clearest way to prevent scope creep and payment disputes. A good SOW names the specific deliverables (not vague goals), defines what done looks like (acceptance criteria), sets the timeline and milestones, lists what the client must provide, and states the payment schedule. It does not have to be long — a two-page SOW beats a thirty-page contract that neither party reads. For recurring work, a shorter engagement letter referencing a master service agreement covers most cases. Always get it signed before starting.
