Global term

Invoice

A formal payment request sent to a client listing the work completed, the amount owed and the payment deadline.

A valid invoice for a UK self-employed person or freelancer must include your name and address (or business name), the client's name and address, a unique invoice number, the date, a description of the work, the amount excluding VAT, the VAT amount if you are VAT-registered, the total amount due, and your payment terms. Payment terms of 14 or 30 days are standard; shorter terms (7 days or net-upon-receipt) are reasonable for small projects. Always send an invoice the day work is approved, not when you remember to. Late invoicing is the single most common cause of freelancers receiving payments later than expected.
